Initiation

This fuzzy picture was what I had in mind for Abbey's birthday cake this year. I don't know why I do these things, it seems like a good idea at the time.

It didn't work out. After a few hours of working and getting one layer just the color and consistency we needed, my mom and I moved on to the brown layer. We used an entire bottle of that brown paste and ended up with a light tan. It looked like a really cool suede cake. NOT the look I was going for. How do they get that color!?!

We'd already put way too much time into it so I let go of my dream cake and did what I could.

Next scene: day of the party. First day with a bona fide two-year-old. I hear 'clink-clink', shoot a terrified look to my mom, and yell 'The Cake!!!'. The birthday girl had knocked it off the cake stand while trying to sneak a bite. My little bro made a quick run to the store and I did what I could with no motivation left. It actually turned out pretty cute but most definitely did not reflect the 10 hours of work we probably put into that thing. Luckily by this point my mom and I could just laugh.

I'm so impressed with you and your cakes. I don't think any of your faithful readers will doubt for one moment the time and energy you put into making events special.

I'm glad mom, dad and Collin were able to be out there this week - I am SO jealous!! Love you guys!

No stinkin way!!!! I love what you titled this post. Yes, it all changes from here I think. 2 years old is a whole new game.
So the cake in the picture is a new cake?? I wish we could see the first cake- suede and all. If you find out how to make chocolate colored fondant, let me know, I have no idea. Still wish I could have been there. that pic of Abby in the yellow sun hat is to die for. Oh, so is SOO cute!

I didn't know you made cakes. I just got into that about two years ago and I love it and I am excited cause I get to make my friends wedding cake. I think the only way to get a dark brown is to start with a chocolate fondant and then add tons of color. I think your cake turned out great!

Oh, how horrible! I wish I could see a picture of the 10-hour long cake. but seriously, the cake in the picture above looks great. But I know how frustrating that must have been! Yep, I guess that was initiation - You've got a two year old! Yippee! :)
